The meeting featured a mission update highlighting staff efforts during a recent snowstorm and initiatives for fostering school culture and community engagement. The Head of School provided reports on student recruitment, enrollment numbers, family re-enrollment, marketing and outreach strategies, upcoming open houses, and academic updates. Facilities planning included discussions on the lease, construction financing, and community engagement for the new campus. The Finance Committee presented the financial forecast for the fiscal year. During an executive session, the board discussed personnel matters and professional services, resulting in the approval of an Executive Coach for the Head of School.
The meeting included updates from the Facility Committee regarding the planned relocation to a larger facility at 1900 Half Street, Suite 101 in Ward 6. Discussions focused on anticipated operational changes, such as extended hours, before-care, after-school programming, staff parking, and a kiss-and-ride process. Facility negotiations detailed plans to expand the space into adjacent residential areas to create more classrooms and bathrooms, and convert a residential dog park into an outdoor play area. The renovation budget of $3-$4 million will cover upgrades to finishes and safety systems, as well as substantial construction to convert residential space for school use. Mitigation strategies for potential traffic and parking concerns in the Buzzard Point area were reviewed. Following an executive session to discuss personnel matters and commercial information, the Board unanimously approved the submission of the facility amendment to the DC Public Charter School Board, the submission of several financing applications to OSSE totaling $2.4M for a direct loan and credit enhancement, and the pursuit of an additional $950K in construction financing.
The meeting commenced with a Mission Moment recognizing a successful field trip to Cox Farms and commending board trustees for their participation in DC PCSB Board training. Key reports included updates on student enrollment, which stood at 228 students for SY25-26, slightly below the internal goal, and plans for upcoming recruitment events like EdFest 2025 and Virtual Open Houses. Staffing updates noted a search for a Director of Spanish Instruction. Academic updates covered professional development initiatives, perfect attendance incentives, and administered assessments (DIBELS, Lectura, and Level Chinese). The Finance Committee presented the September 2025 financials, indicating a net income of $89k. A significant action included the unanimous approval to relocate the facility from Ward 7 to Ward 6. The board subsequently entered an executive session to discuss personnel matters and confidential financial information, returning to vote on the approval of the June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2024 financial audits and the addition of Ms. Erika Bryant as a new Board Trustee effective December 1, 2025.
