- Marion County is retiring its copper-based Plexar phone system for digital, forcing a review of all internet and networking services and vendor backbones. - After a year of presentations from providers including AT&T and Verizon, the county narrowed its options to six vendors and recommended AT&T. - Staff are negotiating with AT&T for a dedicated one-gig fiber line for the courthouse and annex, with the current provider retained as redundant backup. - The November 15th phone system retirement and AT&T's 45-day implementation timeline create an urgent decision deadline for the county commission.
- The fiber buildout has outgrown its nodes, nearing 2,000 customers, prompting a purchase of backup power supplies and 2216 switches to resolve congestion. - The board approved the $126,390 capital budget request for the fiber upgrades, with funds already allocated and vendor Aspen providing the quote. - The telecom team aims to eliminate the remaining 262 coax customers by July 1, 2027, converting them to fiber, having already converted 62 customers and 20 businesses. - An outage management system, planned for implementation by June 1, 2027, will integrate with the fiber network to improve response, with Milsoft recommended as vendor.
